- Rockies rumors: Doors closing to possible trades (Steve Foster) –The Colorado Rockies made the move they needed to make last week, when they traded for relief pitcher Rafael Betancourt from the Cleveland Indians. But the Rockies have been trying to make another move for a left-handed relief pitcher or possibly a left-handed bat off the bench before today’s trade deadline.
- Mexico turning tide on sand theft (John Moore) — The Mexican navy has raided a Cancun beach, accusing a hotel there of the gritty crime of sand stealing. Shell-shocked and occasionally angry, swimmers and sunbathers were turned away by armed sailors and environmental enforcement officers who closed the white-sand beach at the Gran Caribe Real Hotel on Thursday. The hotel is accused of illegally pumping sand from the ocean floor to replenish its beach.
- Rockies pay small price for relievers (Steve Foster) — The Rockies have a new pair of eighth-inning relievers after a trade last week for Rafael Betancourt from the Cleveland Indians and another trade Friday before the deadline for Joe Beimel from the Washington Nationals. Each trade was made for the sake of this season. Neither reliever is likely to return in 2010.
- Cheating cops busted by kid patrol (John Moore) — The heat was on for law enforcement officers taking promotion exams in northwestern China this week, and not just because of test anxiety. Eighteen fifth-graders were recruited to walk the beat during the tests, to make sure that any cheaters would be apprehended. And the students appear to have taken the case seriously — more than their adult predecessors had, at least.
