Jason Hammel nearly did Josh Fogg a favor. He struggled early.

Fogg, who has not pitched since June 24 against the Los Angeles Angels, started throwing in the bullpen in the fifth inning Tuesday against the Nationals. Hammel allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and looked doomed until Ryan Zimmerman hit into a double play. Hammel bounced back and struck out Adam Dunn to end the inning and Fogg’s hope of getting into the game. When Hammel struggled again in the sixth, it was recently recalled Franklin Morales who got the call.

The Rockies have played three full series since Fogg last pitched, and will finish their fourth on Wednesday. Will he get into a game at long last? With Jorge De La Rosa on the mound — his eight shutout innings last week notwithstanding — there’s always a chance.
