It’s August and usually that means it’s Broncos season. But the Colorado Rockies open a big series on the same day the Broncos play their preseason opener and the local media seems more focused on Brandon Marshall and his trial than players who will actually play for the team. So the football excitement is a little dulled this summer.

But the Denver Broncos do play San Francisco 49ers on Friday night. Kyle Orton will get another chance to win over fans, but fortunately for the new Broncos quarterback he won’t have to do so in front of the home crowd. It’s the first preseason game and players who won’t make the team will spend more time on the field than players who will, so what’s worth watching in the game?

Well, there’s Orton.

There’s the people Orton will be throwing to. For the first quarter anyway, it will be interesting to see if he’s in sync with Eddie Royal, Jabar Gaffney, Brandon Stokley and Tony Scheffler.

Correll Buckhalter will start at running back, a job he hopes to keep but will likely cede to Knowshon Moreno sometime before fall if not before the end of August. Moreno will make his debut, which should be worth watching, too.

The Broncos new 3-4 defense will debut with promises from some of its members that it will push people around on the field. We’d be happy if tackling was part of the new scheme.
