The truth may be out there, but be careful how you look for it, or it could cost you.

A British man’s quest to uncover what the American government knows about UFOs might land him in a distant world — U.S. prison.

Gary McKinnon, 43, who is accused of hacking into Pentagon and NASA computers in a hunt for proof of alien life, lost his appeal to the British high court Friday and may be extradited to the U.S. He has fought extradition for three years, and whether he can appeal further could be decided as early as next month.

McKinnon has Asperger’s syndrome and is reportedly obsessed with UFOs. His mother and a Web site supporting his release are trying to get the Obama administration to drop the U.S. government’s extradition request.

The London resident is accused of what U.S. authorities have called the “biggest military hack of all time.” He has admitted launching an invasion of more than 90 NASA and military computers between 2001 an 2002, but says he did it only to look for evidence of extraterrestrials.

He was captured after he tried to download a grainy, black-and-white photo of what he thought was an alien craft from a computer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston — while using his own e-mail address.

At the time, the U.S. government went into orbit, saying that the alien-related attack on its computers caused more than $700,000 in damage and threatened national defense. But I guess the feds weren’t thinking about that last part when they published the IP addresses for all of the hacked computers in the indictment. Thanks for being such a space cadet with our security, Uncle Sam.

And considering how easily McKinnon seems to have passed through the Pentagon’s defense shields, we could be pulverized by any “aliens” who actually meant to harm us in such an attack.
