A Rocky Mountain Independent contributor spotted this vehicle downtown on Tuesday. Yes, that’s a Denver parking enforcement vehicle. And yes, it’s parked at an expired meter.

The contributor watched the driver park, then begin collecting change from meters along the street.

A response from Denver Public Works spokesperson Christine Downs:

“(Meter) collectors are instructed to park at the safest and most accessible space to their route. Our goal is to get the money as safely and as quickly as possible in order to not occupy any parking space for very long. Meter collectors are required to avoid ‘no parking anytime’ zones, refrain from blocking fire hydrants or otherwise park illegally, and they don’t pay the meter because that would be using general fund dollars to pay the general fund.’
