A UFO case that has been called “Britain’s Roswell” was no more alien than a burning truck full of fertilizer, an Englishman says.

Britain’s most famous UFO sighting happened in December 1980 near two military bases that the U.S. Air Force was leasing at Rendlesham Forest, near Woodbridge, England. Air Force personnel stationed at one of the bases, RAF Woodbridge, reported seeing colored lights moving through the trees and an unidentified flying object.

Nearly 29 years later, Peter Turtill, of Ipswich, England, has come forward to say that the “UFO” was actually a truck that he set on fire to cover up a theft. The truck driver said he found a load of stolen fertilizer in the back of the vehicle — after loaning it to a friend, of course — and wanted to dispose of the evidence, so no one would land in trouble.

Turtill, now 66, says the flames from the burning fertilizer and aluminum body of the truck gave off some rather unusual colors, and that they would have made for quite a show when viewed through the trees. It isn’t the first explanation offered for the incident, but it’s definitely the first to involve burning poo.

When it comes to the Rendlesham Forest Incident, critics say UFO hunters can’t see the forest for their beliefs. But UFO investigators contend that the latest story stinks. They question why it took so long for the “truth” to be shoveled out.
