Rockies sign more draft picks; one big pick to go

The Rockies’ 2009 draft could turn out to be one of the better drafts in team history. At the very least it showed the team was willing — finally, like other teams in baseball! — to take a chance on a player it might not sign by drafting high school pitcher Tyler Matzek with the 11th overall pick. Matzek still hasn’t signed, but the everyone else the Rockies are counting on has.

It’s official: Coors Field is a pitcher’s park

The assumptions the national media and sabermetricians continue to make about Coors Field and the offense it allegedly produces, are absurb. Coors Field now plays like the stadium it is: spacious and open, the sort of place where if you have fast outfielders, a good defense and someone who knows how to pitch, you allow fewer hits.

Can we see the Rockies’ future now? Please?

Here are six young players the Rockies should think about letting us see sooner rather than later. With one exception, there’s a pretty good chance these guys would be upgrades.

Rockies get some midseason love

Brad Hawpe, Jim Tracy and Dan O’Dowd get some recognition from SI.com. It’s been a few years since anyone has mentioned the Rockies this time of year as anything other than a department store for deadline deal shopping.

Rockies bullpen still needs help

With exciting young arms like Franklin Morales, Esmil Rogers and Jhoulys Chacin — not to mention Brandon Hynick, who pitched a perfect game last week for Colorado Springs — waiting in the minors, how much longer can the Rockies continue to turn relievers that no one else wanted?

Rockies’ Baker: A player without a home

Five years after it first started, the Rockie finally settled the Garrett Atkins-Jeff Baker-Ian Stewart by trading the one who had always been the odd man out.

Nuggets’ winning ways: Fluke or trend?

In a year when the team was supposed to be cutting costs, the Denver Nuggets emerged as one of the NBA’s most exciting teams. Was it a one-shot run or the beginning of a new era in Denver sports?
